We would like you to have a closer look at WHAT TO EXPECT ON AN EXPEDITION WITH US. Here and now, something about us and more exact info on how an expedition with Enjoy Africa Travel works.
Travel Style
With us you discover the real, raw and unforgettable Africa. More than 12 years of experience and exploring the black continent have allowed us to understand and to find the best way of traveling through this exotic continent. On every of our expeditions we follow our motto “Off the beaten track”. That doesn´t mean that we leave away the big stuff – who wouldn´t want to see Victoria Falls and other highlights, but apart from those main tourist attractions there are a lot more interesting and beautiful things to discover. And mostly, those little sights are unspoilt by tourism.
The main roads are tarred and quite well traveled, good for us to get anywhere. But the real Africa starts, where the smooth road stops. There, where one needs a more sturdy and adaptable car. We always travel in a fully equipped 4×4, we can be independent and self-contained for our explorations. This way, we don´t need to fear deep sand or a river crossing on the way – such cars just belong to Africa.
Adventure experiences
Our trips through Africa aren´t only about sitting in the car and watching the scenery float or taking pictures from the open window. The car will rock over uneven tracks, dash through hot and deep sand or dry river beds or “escape” from a trampling herd of elephants – or it will just wait for us trustfully, when we come back from a cultural event or visit. There is something for everyone, even for the ones looking for more adrenalin than others. For some people, it may not be enough to go offroad and have lions or elephants sniffing out their tent at night, those can choose a walking safari, do bungee jumping or rafting right below the Victoria Falls, go on a long hike, dive into deep caves, the ocean or Lake Malawi or even go on a survival mission in the bush. Or are you a romantic soul that would love to get married in Africa? With us, everything is possible…so let´s go!
Accommodation and Camping
If you want to experience the real Africa, then forget about lodges or hotels. Camping in the bush is a thing that belongs to Africa. There is no better accommodation than the “million stars hotel” with everything that belongs to it, where, instead of a black box sending out soap operas you rather get excited by the African orchestra at night.
The smell of acacias, butter and ash, the crackling of a camp fire and the excitement of what watches you from that shrub close by are part of your experience with us. Is it a lion? Or a hyena? Or a cute little jackal? What exactly is it that sneaks around our camp at night, looking for food scraps that have fallen off our plates? In a tent you are a part of Africa. But nonetheless, if you prefer a safari tent with a bed or a luxurious lodge, we can certainly take you there and make your stay unforgettable.
Food
Africa comes with everything. You need to see and listen but also eat. We will cook together, mostly on fire, sometimes on our gas cooker. We shop some of our food basics before the expedition starts, but will mostly go shop on local markets or alongside the road. This way, it´s a perfect opportunity to support the locals.
The African “cuisine” isn´t quite as rich and diverse as for example the Asian or Arabic cuisine, but still, there is a lot to try and experiment with. Local “restaurants” or food stalls along the roadside offer typical African food. We will try and sample, but also cook from African ingredients. You will like it!
Safari
Do you go to the zoo or do you not really like to see animals trapped in a cage? We are the same. There is nothing better than watching elephants, lions, giraffes or other animals moving freely in the bush, there, where they belong. There are not too many wild places anymore, but there are a few left. There are fenced or unfenced national parks and game reserves in Africa and we will spend quite a bit of time in them to watch Africa´s biggest and smallest inhabitants.
Culture and Locals
Africa´s diversity is home to thousands of tribes and ethnical groups. Sudan alone boasts more than 700 ethnicities, Zambia comes up with another 70. Most of them keep their traditions and cultural life. We love Africans same like the whole of Africa and we always try to explore local life as much as we can. Often we dive into the culture, shop with them, chat with them, play football with them. And if there is a chance of taking part in a ceremony or festivity, then we go for it, often it can be a very unique experience. Sudanese weddings, a rain ceremony of the Hamar people of Ethiopia and many other events have been witnessed by us.
Relax
An African proverb says: “Europeans have watches, Africans have time!” On a typical African adventure one needs time to relax, to wind down, straighten out thoughts and process the trip. We will find the most beautiful spots for you to regain energy for the upcoming miles, those can be idyllic beaches, hot springs and many more…
Let´s support together
On the whole African continent there are many aid projects, many NGOs are present in nearly every African country. Mostly they help children and people. There are a lot of options, depending on your preference. We firmly support wildlife and nature protection and can certainly help you to find the right and most interesting project for yourself, if you want to help Africa.
But already by taking part in our expeditions you help Africa. 5% of our guiding fees we give back to Africa – to our carefully selected projects, saving elephants, rhinos and other wildlife, which are on the brink of extinction. We also visit orphanages and certain projects, where, by paying an entrance fee, activities or camping, one already supports the project.
We don´t agree with handing out sweets, gifts, pens and other stuff from the window of our car. And on our expeditions, we will not accept that. When sitting around a camp fire, we can explain you why. One has to experience and respect Africa, before one understands. We support locals by using their services, their shops, their products or sleeping in community camps. “Something for something” is what has always worked best for us.
